Sunday Links

1. There have been 1,500 accidents and incidents on U.K. wind farms, including 4 deaths, according to The Telegraph.

2. Rising wage pressures are moving from China to Vietnam, as Japanese companies that built plants in Vietnam to take advantage of low wages are finding the country is no longer such a cheap and abundant source of labor, according to the Japan Times.

3. West Virginia University has found a profitable way to curb excessive binge drinking and alcohol-related arrests at home football games: sell beer at concession stands

4.  Penelope Trunk says "Stop Telling Women To Do Startups." People are pretty good at making choices for themselves. Men can stay home. Women can do startups. The thing is, most don’t want to. And that’s okay. Men and women are different.  So what?

i happened to have a conversation with a windmill manufacturer last week and the economics of the UK market absolutely stunned me, so i thought i'd share.

if you put in a "small scale turbine" (defined as about 10kw) you get a fantastic "return on investment". here's how it breaks down:

you get a 14p/kwh savings on the electricity cost from not having to buy it.

on top of that, you get a 28p/kwh subsidy.

if you sell the power rather than use it, you get an additional 3p subsidy.

this comes out to a whopping 45p per kwh, 3.2 times the going rate at a home, much less wholesale. and note that that's kwh at the point you generate, not what actually arrives at a user after line costs.

converted into dollars, it's 70c per kwh, and absolutely stunning figure.

one of these turbines costs $85k fully installed.

at these rates, a typical turbine produces around $15 k a year in cashflow, a 17.6% rate of return.

no wonder they are springing up like mushrooms after rain.

if you take out all the subsidies, the return drops to 5%, likely more like 2-3% after maintenance and line loss.

the whole industry is essentially just a subsidy grab. the UK government is paying 45p for power than can be generated using other modalities at more like 10p.

That makes is a lot more dangerous than nuclear. And as morganovich pointed out, a lot more expensive.

Japan has also asked Thailand to come up with 750,000 skilled workers.

Japan's industrial base will be hollowed out by a mighty yen, but they will manufacture in SE Asia.

Does this have a familiar ring to it?

Juandos-

Why, now you are converted to my team!

Soon you recognize that the Dems are stupid Socialists and the GOP is a filthy band of corrupt nincompoops.

Both parties spend your money for nothing.

The GOP loses the ugly contest (or wins it perhaps) as they are dump-poop warmongers to boot.

as has been pointed out to you repeatedly, japans period of strong economic performance coincide with a s trong yen.. as ever, you are just making up facts and ignoring the obvious.

japan is in demographic collapse. their population is shrinking. their working age population is dropping even faster and are having to support more and more retirees.

it's got nothing to do with the yen.

stop and think for even one second: countries in rescession go looking for foreign workers?

what color is the sky on your world?

they are looking to replace their hollowed out worker base.

i realize it's a waste of time to explain this to you, as you have the memory of a goldfish, but you really new some new material.

this brand of nonsense has already been debunked about a dozen times.

Hey, wasn't it the Democrapic President Barry Obama, the Nobel Peace Prize winner, who went to war with Libya?

Or did that escape your notice too, Benji?

++++++++++++++++++

Actually, no. It let's not let reality interfere.

And if we insist on claiming this was Barry's war, lets not forget it was over in a matter of weeks.

At 12/12/2011 6:31 AM, Blogger Methinks said...

No, Hydra? Barry didn't go to war or did he? The answer can't be "it was over in a matter of weeks" and "it didn't happen". Not even for someone as confused as you.

Also, we're redefining "war-monger" to any conflict lasting longer than a few months now?

Fine, then FDR is definitely a war monger and so is LBJ. So much for the fiction of the peace loving Democrap.

You are the one confused, or obfuscating.

If you were not so eager to make me something I am not, you would not have to be puttting words in my mouth.

Look, I agree that playing a heavy and critcal support role and thenclaiming youa re not "in" the war is a half truth at best. Obama is not the only one to go there.

bay of pigs, viet nam, all manner of illegal cross border incursions into cambodia and laos.

yup, those were the days.

it's actually kind of funny that the rebublicans gett he war monger label.

history shows something quite different.

ww1: wilson - D
ww2: FDR - D
korea: truman - D
viet nam: LBJ (sent first combat units in 1965)

there seems to be some serious revisionism going on here.

Yes there is but the revisionism comes from both sides. When Ron Paul reminded some so-called conservative audiences that the Old Right was against war and that Republican candidates were elected to end wars some in the audience laughed while others booed. The Democrats are getting away with their lying because the Republicans like the lies and allow them to be told without a challenge.

i'm not sure i understand what you are saying here. what lies do they like and why?

seems to me like you get some very extreme media bias as well.

gop statements get fact checked and called out, but the left gets a free pass (especially the greens). the astounding likes and distortions the AGW crowd in particular has been allowed to get away with are literally breathtaking.

The lie that it is Republicans who have sent troops abroad to fight foreign wars. The lie that Democrats are more likely to favour peace and be reluctant to get involved in foreign disputes.

The why part is puzzling to me. I guess that the current party leadership is much more dependent on support from the military industrial complex.

seems to me like you get some very extreme media bias as well.

Most of the media is Socialist. Fox is on the other side and embraces National Socialism.

I agree.

That is about to end as the climate fails to confirm the predictions made by the greens and their corruption and lies are exposed on the web by independent media.

True, but that's not saying much. In the USA, cars owned by Teddy Kennedy have been more dangerous than commercial nuclear plants.

As the joke went, "I'd rather hunt with Dick Cheney than drive with Teddy Kennedy."

The only thing actually hollowed out is, of course, Benny's skull, which represents the finest vacuum in human experience, despite the best efforts of scientists to somehow better it.

It's of the same factual value as the notion that the Republicans are the racists.

Zero is a value, after all.

Rather than list off the litany and going off-topic, here's a nice piece summarizing them all, and it's an impressively long list -- Those racist Dems have done a magnificent job of hiding their racism behind the curtain:

i wish i beleieved yuo were correct.

instead they keep pumping out "models" that show that "it must be humans" and arguing in durban for a world climate court.

they release distorted study results before even peer review, make a media splash, and by the time the facts get checked and debunked, are on to the next one.

the initial media blitz uses up all the oxygen, and no one is even paying attention anymore once it turns out to be untrue.

while they are horrid scientists, the AGW crowd are very good media manipulators.

it's not going to be easy to drive a stake through their heart.
