The Most Prolific Consumer Device on the Planet

BBC -- "More than a billion mobile phone connections have been added to the global tally in just 18 months, and there are now more than five billion connections worldwide - which is three times as many phones as personal computers.

In the UK in 1987, when the first mobile companies launched, an industry insider predicted a maximum of 10,000 phones.  Now 30 million phones are sold every year in the UK."

From the link: 'In many regions, penetration exceeds 100%, where there is more than one connection per person in the country'...

Hmmm, I wonder what mundane but absolutely necessary collection of items is needed to support this sort of expansion?

Now those might be the companies to consider investing in...

From the same BBC article: 'The growth of connected devices will also drive this phenomenon, a laptop with a USB dongle, the Apple iPad, and so on'...

The Chinese are jumping in with both feet into this environment...

Is this really true? It sounds a bit too much like the predictions IBM made about computers.

Somebody has a link about this?

I'm thinking of the megabucks somebody could make recycling mobile (cell) phones or could make selling cases, headsets, chargers, antennas and add ons.

Depends on who's really recycling them.

Re: number of phones sold annually in UK. They seem to get a new device on average every year if this UK based website is correct.

http://www.mobilephonesandsafety.co.uk/environmental-impact-mobile-phones.html

Note quotes like "A typical phone is used only for a period of one year.."

If so, they're likely cheap, low featured phones and that stat could be correct. A different website said about 60% of UK users are on prepaid plans which generally come with cheaper phones.
