Popular Mechanics' list of 100 skills a man should know is stupid beyond belief. How can anyone believe that all men should know how to retrieve and interpret automobile diagnositic codes? Or change a fan belt? Or drive an SUV off road (when you don't own an SUV)? Or hitch a trailer (when your car can't pull one)? Another great one: Use a sewing machine.
My suggestion: Replace most of the list with two skills. 1. Use the yellow pages to find local services you need. 2. Use the internet to order items or services.
Cheers, dr. t,
Popular Mechanics meets the basic economic principle of opportunity cost.
The publication's name does explain the selection bias. Diagnostic codes?
The real mystery is the sewing machine. Is this a concession to the editor's wife? :D
