Obama Deserves No Credit for the Oil and Gas Boom

From Warren Meyer in Forbes (ht/Morganovich):

"The one person who deserves no credit for this [oil and gas] boom is Barack Obama.  In fact, this Administration has bent over backwards to make oil and gas production and exploration as difficult as possible. According to the Institute for Energy Research (IER), the Obama Administration has been issuing BLM oil and gas leases at the lowest pace of any president in the last 30 years  – in fact at half the rate of the Clinton White House and 80% slower than in the Reagan era, dragging their feet to please the environmental lobby (see top chart above).

By comparing oil and gas production on Federal vs. state and private lands, we can get a true read on this Administration’s energy policy. Since Obama took office, according to the Institute for Energy Research, oil production has fallen precipitously on Federal onshore and offshore leases, while it has increased by an even larger amount on state and private lands largely outside of this Administration’s reach. The only reason total oil [and gas] production has increased since Obama took office is because private companies on state and private lands have increased production enough to offset the large drop that has occurred in Obama-controlled producing regions. Obama’s taking credit for the current oil and gas boom ranks up there in the pantheon of great political whoppers right next to Al Gore’s invention of the Internet."

MP: The bottom chart above shows that the share of total natural gas production taking place on federally administered land fell to 20% in 2010, the lowest share in at least 35 years.

I don't fully understand how the whole process works, so question:

The Federal Government only controls permits for federal lands? If a company owns the land, they do not need a permit to drill?

Larry,

Great ad hominem attack. You don't like the data, attack the Koch brothers rather than present data showing the chart is wrong. Did you bother to open the link that professor Perry provided? Those pesky Koch brothers provided links to the government documents where they got the data.

Larry finds it hard to believe Obama, fresh off cancelling the Keystone pipeline, is not good for the oil and gas industry. This would be the same President of the illegal drilling moratorium in the gulf. The same guy who declared enormous swaths of the United States off limits to drilling forever. The same guy who relentlessly attacks oil companies and wants to take away from them the legitimate credits and deductions that are available to all businesses.

Larry is skeptical and blames the Koch brothers. Larry is an idiot.

larry-

that comment is a joke.

the data in the IER chart come straight from the federal government. check the BLM site cited under the chart.

oh, you didn't bother to even look at the sourcing before you ran your mouth? what a surprise.

how about the chart under it from the EIA? (another government agency)

seriously, why do you waste our time with this nonsense and ad hominem? you could easily have answered your own question by just clicking on the chart. you'd know it was federal bureau of land management data.

instead, you knee jerk into "it's all lies! koch! koch!" and make yourself look like a fool.

"The Federal Government only controls permits for federal lands? If a company owns the land, they do not need a permit to drill?"

it's a good question, and i'm not sure i understand it fully, but here is what i do know:

first off, they are talking about leases, not permits. the federal government offers leases on parcels of land. you need one to be able to explore, drill, etc.

i am not sure if that also gives you a defacto permit. i think you need further permissions as companies with leases in the gulf of mexico had their rights to drill taken away after the bp spill. this would seem to imply that there is another layer of permitting on top, but i'm not really clear on how it works exactly.

vangel may know. he seems to do a lot of work on oil and gas.

how about here: " the numbers for 2011 include a lease sale in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve-Alaska in December."

"The same guy who relentlessly attacks oil companies and wants to take away from them the legitimate credits and deductions that are available to all"

still trying to ascertain that one.. might be true...

read the whole article and you'll see the industry is pissed that they're also talking about increasing the royalties.

there are some other issues.

differences between leases.. and development of leased lands...

leases have trended down for a while including under Bush...

but no.. the Koch boys are not known for their objective views.

and like others in the RWEC - they love to twist information and spew disinformation and they're good at it but using them as a credible, unbiased source of information is just plain silly.

Even then.. if there is a corroborating second source, I'll accept it..but not from just a single source like the Koch boys.. nor all the right wing nut sites that parrot their blather.

you can take something the Koch or Heritage or Cato puts out... put quotes around it and watch the dozens of like-minded sites parroting the blather.

the left wing does it also..

I like MR. Ronald Reagan's approach: "Trust but verify" and if it is the Koch brothers... distrust until you verify.

Yes, I did read the whole article. It's very short. The source of your cite is...a blogger at Fuel Fix with no references. It's copied word for word.

The industry being pissed is not relevant to the subject of decreasing production on federal land.

How about the EIA? Are they a right wing blather butt site?

" energy information administration, annual energy review, Table 14"

no date.. but I could not find Table 14 either.

if you want to reference a source... why not give the explicit link and the page number?

I've gone through this with Heritage, Cato, etc.. where they give a source but tracking it down is often futile.

I don't have that problem with credible sites.. they gladly give you the reference and make it easy to get to it.

I did look.

At the same time, the number of leases DID increase in 2011 which was not reported which I find fairly typical with these kinds of biased groups. They select out data ...cherry-pick.. out of context to misrepresent the reality.

If you bothered to read the DOI link..you would have discovered why the trend was down in the last few years, including Bush and that this administration has apparently taken some actions to increase the leases.

but you'd not get much of that from the folks that gave that report because their goal is not to present an objective picture to begin with and folks like you are only too glad to swallow whatever propaganda they dump...because you too apparently don't care if it is biased.

I spent the time Morg and the truth is that there is a shit-load of biased information promoted here in CD and few of you seem really interested in the facts but only the talking points you like against the current administration.

I'm not defending this administration. They have their problems but what you guys do it is simply over the top..you're basically part of the right wing echo chamber...

So what? I didn't say he wanted to raise the gas tax, that would cost him more politcally. That's not how an Alinskyite operates. He didn't succeed in ramming through cap and trade, I don't give him credit for that. You do.

"you blamed Obama..then sneakily quoted someone else and Obama forthrightly rejected the idea."

Huh? Steven Chu said he wants gas to go up to European levels. He is Obama's choice for Energy Secretary. Obama wants electricity prices to skyrocket. This is indisputable, so what are you babbling about? It's not hard to look at the totality of Obama's actions and figure out what he's trying to do, especially when it comes straight out of his own mouth. But you'd rather demonstrate how dumb you are by making asinine statements about the Koch brothers.

Again, the thing I find most astounding is you comment here regularly, yet you didn't even know about Obama's plans for electricity. Perhaps you were too busy looking down your nose at Sarah Palin to pay attention to the human wrecking ball you helped saddle the country.

"it's like you have to lie...and misrepresent ...."

You haven't uncovered a single lie. You're now just trying to distract from your own ignorance.

"electricity rates have NOT skyrocketed.."

Obama wasn't able to ram his ideas through on this front. Only you would be dumb enough give him credit.

"..and Obama has nothing to do with gas prices..."

Summary:
-Buffett gets another sweetheart deal that makes him richer.

-First Solar gets out of a huge headache. It gets get to sell solar panels to Topaz.

-The citizens of California that will use this power will get nothing. They will continue to pay the highest rates for electricity in the country.

-The US tax payers foot the bill for another $600 - $700mm. That's the "Vig" for Warren. Those taxpayers also get nothing in return.

The DOE did substantial work before nixing the deal. This PDF link to the DOE shows just how much had been accomplished prior to 9/30. (How much did this report cost the DOE/us? Many millions.)"

so.. the DOE does the due diligence and turns down the deal so what do the anti-Obama folks do?

of course.. they then blame the costs of the study on the govt!
