Markets in Everything: $97 iPhones at Wal-Mart
(CHICAGO) (WLS) -- "The price tag on a 16 gigabyte iPhone GS at Walmart stores will be $97 beginning this week. Apple's suggested price is $199. Walmart's deal requires a 2-year contract with AT&T.
The reduced price comes less than two weeks before Apple is expected to unveil the next-generation model, which often leads to a dramatic drop in sales of older iPhones."

They're clearing the channel for the iphone 4 or whatever it's being called. Reportedly, they already stopped delivering new inventory of the 3GS to AT&T stores.
My guess is they keep the 3GS in Walmart and do a razor blade business model. Sell the lower priced phone and make dollars on itunes, the app store, and some kick back from AT&T for the subscriber.
Putting iPhones in the hands of the people (i.e. making them affordable) is a net positive for society.
I know iPhone has improved my productivity.

Hmmm, interesting comment anon @ 5/25/2010 9:25 PM and it made me curious...
From a May 17, 2010 Fortune (tech)site: 4.5 million iPhone 4Gs in 24 days?
Supposedly the new iPhones have:
Improved display
Faster chip and more memory
Compact construction
Ambitious build-out
4.5 million available is about right for the first several weeks. They sold nearly 3 million iphones per month for Q1, which was actually higher than the holiday quarter.

It might be a little optimistic to sell 4.5 million in 24 days, but they won't sit around long.
