Markets in Everything: College-Themed Caskets

Taking School Spirit to the Grave

NEW YORK -- If you thought school spirit meant just plastering your college bumper sticker on your car, think again. These days, devoted alumni and fans of their college team can show their undying school spirit — in a college-themed casket.

"I don't think any of us can deny the experience education has played in our lives," said Scott Walston, president of Collegiate Memorials, which sells the caskets for 46 schools throughout the country. "When families choose the casket, they're setting the stage to conjure up memories to celebrate who the person was."

No problem here, just a couple of snags:

Most of the time, the casket's going to be sitting in the ground, inside something else. Thankfully they diversified enough in their products to make that less of an issue.

If that's no problem:
Provided your university was in The South, and not how some UofM fans might describe the South(Ohio State). Like-minded folks who went to northern universities will have to go with someone else- even if they live south of the Mason-Dixon.

Then again, you could design your own coffin.

Save the big markup. Just bring a stack of school bumper stickers to the funeral and have attendees slap them on the casket.
