Ah, yes. Nothing like a self absorbed, self important "artist" with a superior sense of bringing his 'enlightenment" to the unwashed masses. Jerks.
None of the artists described their goals or audience with the condescension that you describe. Rather, those who shopdrop out of a desire to communicate rather than a desire to promote, are interested in having a conversation, not a sermon. I'd gladly welcome a moment of humor, of beauty or of critical reflection to unsettle my own routine shopping experience.
