Garage Sale Gestapos in Minnesota

The Minneapolis suburb of Minnetonka plans to press charges against a 72-year-old woman for holding a garage sale in her mother's old house.

Read about it here. What would Thomas Jefferson think?

She is obligated to comply with existing laws just like the rest of us. She had fair warning yet continued her illegal and already sanctioned activities as usual.

She wasn't even a resident of the neighborhood where she was selling goods.

As cute as it might be to have a nice lady selling things twice yearly it is necessary to have legislation that prevents others from using the same loophole to establish a pattern of unlicensed, uninsured, non-tax-paying, commercial behavior that violates residents rights to the quiet enjoyment of their homes.

Government officials choose to ignore existing laws all the time.

Take for example the sanctuary cities from the east coast to the west coast where mayors, governors and U.S. congressmen tell the police not to enforce federal immigration laws.

If they get to choose which laws to comply with, why can't everyone else?

Do you think any government official would be sympathetic [or better yet, find a way to legalize our behavior] if I can get 20 million people to agree not to comply with the income tax laws?

Maybe we could get income tax sanctuary cities.
