It said I have a Southern accent. I would say that is accurate.
It is not a comprehensive survey or good at discerning smaller regional accents though. It also breaks down when the test is taken by people from abroad (although I would note that many old American accents have striking similarities with various British dialects).
I got neutral or the generic American accent not particularly connected to any one region. It did give me the midland region from Penn. through Ohio and Illinois. I'm actually spent all my life in California and haven't ever been to those states which I find amusing.
It said that my accent was neutral, also. That seems odd because I have lived on the MS Gulf Coast all of my life and many of my friends who live elsewhere comment on my southern accent (which I don't think is noticeable).
Neutral here. But then a Francophone in Mauritius told me essentially the same thing 30 years ago. Maybe it's the product of having a Floridian mother and a father born in Massachusetts but reared in California. And spending most of my life in Virginia.
Hmmm. It said I had a "Northeastern" accent. Actually, my accent is British (South-East England).

ReplyDeleteI have a Western accent. Um... I was born in the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania. Maybe I watched too many westerns as a kid.
