Markets in Everything: Fly-In, Fly-Out Coal Girls

SUNDAY MAIL -- "Fly-in, fly-out "working girls" traveling from as far away as New Zealand to the resource-rich mining regions of Queensland and Western Australia are making as much money in one or two days as mine laborers earn in a week. The rich pickings up to $2000 a day are attracting scores of women to communities bursting with cashed-up men deprived of female company for weeks."

CP's showing lots of class with that item. What's next a graph showing an "improvement" in cocaine consumption in Fort McMurray? Nuts.

Yes, because sex is something disgusting and shameful, and we should just act like it doesn't exist.

Bacic supply-and-demand with a bit of nature thrown in. No surprises here at all.

BS..geoih...where did I say that sex was disgusting and shameful?

Prostitution might not even be either....it's just "sad". If you do a little research you will find that sex workers are not a very happy bunch, have a MUCH higher incidence of drug addiction than the general population, die much earlier, etc etc...

Markets in everything? So what's the price of a contract killing these days? Going up or down?

I still say NUTS.

Killing is illegal. The article says the sex-for-money transaction is both legal and unregulated. Is there a better model of a free market system?

A lot of workers are sad and broke. Isn't not broke better?

truth or consequences: aren't you mistaking the effect for the cause here?

T or C,

I'm obviously not geoih, so I can't speak for him, but I'd say that your clear disdain of a free exchange between mutually agreeing partners allowed him/her to read between the lines.

Perhaps sex workers wouldn't be so unhappy if so many people didn't look down on them and compare them to murderers.

t or c-

i'm with geo.

you are putting a whole pile of personal view into that. i doubt such highly paid call girls flying in from overseas are the sorrowful bunch you describe.

they are well paid and going far out of their way.

what consenting adults contract to do is fine by me. who is being harmed?

you could find lots of sorrowful workers at burger king. i bet they are multiples more so than these girls.

i think it's a great example for CD.

labor flows to demand.

the traditional axiom is that all the money in mining is in selling picks and shovels.

looks like we might need an addendum to that.

Morganovich,

Not to mention that the sorrowful bunch in question is a 'chicken or the egg' argument. With the current world view on prostitutes, the unhappy people in that profession were likely already there before they started.

Actually, I've done a little research and found that drug addicts are not a very happy bunch, have a higher incidence of prostitution than the general public, die much earlier, etc etc...

Ok, my mistake...I forgot this is the site that advocated in the past for a commercial market in body parts and organs!

No wonder prostitution doesn't raise an eyebrow around here.

"As long as you can put a price tag on it, it's a good thing"?
I thought we stopped living in caves a long time ago.

and just to be clear my dissapointment has nothing to do with morals or what two people decide to do behind closed doors (heck I think gay marriage is a human rights issue)...

I don't think little girls grow up thinking: "Hey, when I grow up I'm going to be a hooker".(?)

You can keep your "romantic" notion that hookers are just level headed gals that one day decide to make a very good living...but that is a very very small minority...for most it was bad circumstances and a feeling of complete hopelessness that led them down that path...and that ain't FREEDOM as I understand it.

No, as long as it involves consenting adults, it's not my business, or yours.

Body parts: There is already a market in body parts. I can donate a body part, but I can't get paid for it. Everyone else involved gets paid, except the provider of the body part. What sense does that make?

Prostitution: Presumable two consenting adults can agree to have sex, and it's nobody else's business, but if one of them gets paid, there's now something wrong?

Your positions are inconsistent.

Gay marriage: Marriage, in fact personal relationships of any kind, are strictly the private business of the consenting adults involved. It is not something anyone else has any business involving themselves in, or regulating through government.

These statements aren't consistent with a thinking person. So, if you meant to say, "I forgot, this is were people come to think and theorize about possibility/outcomes."
You're correct. You did forget.

Hey Truth or Con,

Just by the way....I love the picture of (I'm guessing) your dog.
What a sweet face. How old is he or she?....kind of has the "wise eyes" of an older dog.
I can disagree with you and still love your dog.

ok, let's get down down to brass tacks....you're sitting down at Thanksgiving dinner, your sister, who could't afford a car a month ago, drives up in a Mercedes....as you're passing the mashed potatoes you ask: "Hey, sis what's new?" and she says: "Haven't you heard, I started turning tricks for a living".....and what the heck is your response?? "Great move sis...free markets, supply and demand...it's all good!" (????)yeah right... come on boys get real

I might be relieved that she will no longer be living in that awful crack house with her sleazeball crack dealer boyfriend, but had become a successful, independent businesswoman, with the Mercedes you mentioned, and her own condo in a gated community.

By the way, how did you know about the car? Have you "dated" her?

Before the crack dealer saved her from life on the street, she mostly ate out of dumpsters, and sifted through trash at the local dump to find resell-able items.

So yes, I'm quite pleased with her social and income mobility.

truth or con, I got news for you, she's not going to buy a Merc "turning tricks." She'd have to be making $1-4k/hour, like the expensive call-girl that brought Spitzer down. I'd hope that nobody in my family would go into that profession, but I don't deign to make that decision for them either, by making it illegal.

Neither of my sisters are hot enough to command that kind of cash so, no matter how hard I try, I can't imagine the scenario.

I honestly believe that I'd be more concerned with their future income potential than what they were doing. I don't think I'd be any more proud of them if they had jobs spinning for political candidates or lobbying.

Seems like a good arrangement. The women want the money. The men want the sex. Both sides exchange one for the other voluntarily.

I think she said it was leased.

A recent study by Steven D. Levitt et al of University of Chicago indicated that street prostitutes in Chicago made on average $25-30/hr. This $50-60k/yr should be enough to cover an inexpensive Mercedes lease payment. :)

Ron, you should try skimming the actual paper you link to, which notes that "The transaction-level data we collected suggests that street prostitution yields an average wage of $27 per hour. Given the relatively limited hours that active prostitutes work, this generates less than $20,000 annually for a women working year round in prostitution." (page 3)

You're not making big money on the street, as you can only work so many hours, which is why you need to rope in the Spitzers of the world to make the Merc money. I've got no problem with either, though if prostitution were legal you could probably cut down on STDs, just like I have no problem with women "donating" their eggs for $4k+ in cash.

You're right. As my comment was very much tongue in cheek, I didn't spend a lot of time with my reference.
