This interactive map from the NYTimes allows you to examine Netflix movie rental patterns, neighborhood by neighborhood (by zipcode) in a dozen cities. Some titles with distinct patterns are Mad Men, Obsessed and Last Chance Harvey (see below for the DC area, the darker the shaded area, the higher the ranking).
Dr. Mark J. Perry is a professor of economics and finance in the School of Management at the Flint campus of the University of Michigan. Perry holds two graduate degrees in economics (M.A. and Ph.D.) from George Mason University near Washington, D.C. In addition, he holds an MBA degree in finance from the Curtis L. Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. In addition to a faculty appointment at the University of Michigan-Flint, Perry is also a visiting scholar at The American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C.

Using the New York City Map, it seems like the Wealthier Areas of the city (Manhattan) seems to rent the more critically acclaimed films more than other areas.
I wonder if there could be a correlation between wealth and the type of films rented.
What no map for "Che"? I'm sure it would turn Manhattan and the Bay Area red. I guess that would just be too obvious.
Actually Anon., 'Milk' unsurprisingly was the overwhelming favorite for San Francisco but to be fair the same could be stated about other major metro areas...
I checked out my city and Milk seemed to be the most popular. My zip had Slumdog Millionair. In my son's college neighborhood Role Models was on top. I had never heard of Role Models but its story line of giving community service as crime punihsment for two young guys, as a comedy, seems right for a college zip.
This is not SF, so Milk's appeal may be just a terrific acting job again by Sean Penn.
San Francisco needs to rent a few thousand more DVDs of Dexter until someone gets a bold idea.
So, "Obsessed" is rented by black people? I think that's what they're trying to say, without coming out and saying it.
