Do As I Say/Legislate, Not As I Do
WALL STREET JOURNAL -- Last Tuesday, the Senate health committee voted 12-11 in favor of a two-page amendment courtesy of Republican Tom Coburn that would require all Members and their staffs to enroll in any new government-run health plan. Yet all Democrats -- with the exceptions of acting chairman Chris Dodd, Barbara Mikulski and Ted Kennedy via proxy -- voted nay.
In other words, Sherrod Brown and Sheldon Whitehouse won't themselves join a plan that "will offer benefits that are as good as those available through private insurance plans -- or better," as the Ohio and Rhode Island liberals put it in a recent op-ed. And even a self-described socialist like Vermont's Bernie Sanders, who supports a government-only system, wouldn't sign himself up.
Of course, they also qualify now for generous Congressional coverage. Most Americans won't have the same choice.

An unintended consequence is that Congress, being enrollees, also decide the funding. This would lead to substantial increases in funding. The funding source is other people's money but for their benefit. The moral hazard is enormous here.
I would rather over pay for a few hundred pompous blowhards than for millions of beneficiaries.

All government employees have separate taxpayer funded pension plans and are exempted from paying into the Social Security system.
We the taxpayers have to pay for our mediocre Social Security plan and for the Cadillac plan that the elites in the governing class have, while they pay for neither.
Hey Rand, you're about 15 yearsish out of date. Any federal employee hired in that time pays into the same broken Social Insecurity plan as everyone else. In addition, the FERS plan drastically cut the fixed pension part of the old CSRS plan and replaced it with semi-matching TSP contributions similar to private sector 401k plans.

Congress ought to pay the same premium that would be required of everyone else were they to be under the same plan. That would stop congressional abuse. As for uninsured Americans, let's just have a system that's affordable and available to all. We don't need Government to determine that. Do away with out of control costs and frivolous lawsuits and we might see reasonably priced healthcare. This country is at the top of the list for high cost of healthcare. Worldwide insurers will insure everywhere EXCEPT the US. If they include the cost of covering someone in the US then their costs are a minimum of 4 times more for the same coverage. That's gotta tell you something
