Arctic Ice 2X As Thick As Expected: Global Cooling?

OSLO -- Al Gore said Tuesday the world must act quickly to slow the melting of the world's polar ice packs and glaciers before it reaches a critical rate for global warming. "We have to act and we have to act quickly because we don't want to cross this tipping point," the Nobel peace laureate and former U.S. vice president told a meeting of foreign ministers, experts and scientists from the most affected countries.

CANADA FREE PRESS -- The research aircraft “Polar 5” (see photo above) today concluded its Arctic expedition in Canada. During the flight, researchers measured the current ice thickness at the North Pole and in areas that have never before been surveyed. The result: The sea-ice in the surveyed areas is apparently thicker than scientists had suspected.

Normally, newly formed ice measures some two meters in thickness after two years. “Here, we measured ice thickness up to four meters,” said a spokesperson for Bremerhaven’s Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research. At present, this result contradicts the warming of the sea water, according to the scientists.

National Post -- Ice in the Arctic is often twice as thick as expected, report surprised scientists who returned last week from a major scientific expedition. The scientists - a 20-member contingent from Canada, the U.S., Germany, and Italy - spent one month exploring the North Pole as well as never-before measured regions of the Arctic. Among their findings: Rather than finding newly formed ice to be two metres thick, "we measured ice thickness up to four metres," stated a spokesperson for the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research of the Helmholtz Association, Germany's largest scientific organization.

Does this mean we can breathe now?

New York Times Mainstreaming Climate Dissenters?Has the global sea ice decline stopped?

The latest Consumer Reports magazine had a ridiculous article about the negative results of global warming. It was a hysterical (not funny, but freaking out) warning of mental illness, increased disease (mosquitoes will increase you know) ... it was absolutely pathetic and had nothing to do with Consumer Reports. I was quite disgusted.

Most "scientists" still believe the verdict is out on climate change. It's the media and some politicians who have said otherwise. Hopefully they keep studying it so we can get a better idea of what is really happening and if we need/can/should do anything about it. In any case being certain that we are not influencing the climate is a fool’s assumption and putting any weight in piecemeal studies like this one is like understanding the forest by looking at a tree.

"environmentalists and mainstream climate scientists, however much they disagree with Mr. Morano’s views, still pay attention to what he does"

Gotta love the way the NYT gives the old veiled "some scientists" but only directly quotes 2 people, one of whom is the head of Green Peace or tries to taint by association ie. funding by Exxon (not directly but through another organization). Then there's the old straw man discrediting the credentials of those who object (although such criteria are never applied to Al Gore with one university course in science).

1,

Thanks for the article. Nice to know that someone is standing up to ensure that this issue is not hijacked by the political activists.

How "the debate is over; let's talk about public policy not science" can fool anyone is beyond me. Scientific knowledge evolves as new information invalidates existing theories. That somehow anyone could say, this is complete and no new information will be entertained...that isn't science, that's politics.

Interesting WWF has recently identified 2020 as the date by which we must "do something" or there will be irrevocable consequences. Obama isn't the only one who knows that a crisis is useful.

The good news is that due to global warming Congress has decided to institute a hefty tax on all sources of energy to pay to offset the effects of global warming.

The bad news is that the tax to deal with global cooling is twice that of the global warming tax.

Now, who still denies global warming?

Anon,

Are you kidding?

This issue was never about denying global warming. It was about what might be causing the warming trend.

Evidence of warming does not prove the GHG theory. One would expect the troposphere to be warming if the GHG theory is correct. One would expect there to be CO2 hot point signatures in the atmosphere but there aren't any.

Why has the medieval warm period been eliminated from the reconstructed climate graphs although it was shown as being much warmer in the first IPCC report and the archeological record indicates Europe and Iceland were much warmer (ie. Viking graves in Iceland in what is now permafrost which you would need a backhoe to scratch)?

Why does the UN promote the IPCC Summary for Policy Makers while the scientific report goes largely unreported in the media? Isn't it interesting that scientific report indicates there is still considerable divergence of opinion on this subject while the IPCC Summary for Policy Makers proclaims GHG theory to be as certain as the sun rising in the morning?

What if nothing that we do will make a pick of difference as suggested by co-repicient of the Nobel Prize, John Christie? Are you willing to accept European style economic stagnation and a lower standard of living without actually producing any environmental benefit?

bravo QT.

I should warn you, though - the terms of the argument have changed. No longer is the problem warming specifically. Now, it's the much harder-to-combat climate change. Apparently what we currently have is ideal, so any movement away from these conditions is cause for sabotaging human activity.

I was thinking earlier today about the phrase "Inconvenient Truth." Forgetting for a moment that nothing near "truth" has been proven, to call it "inconvenient" shows just how environmentalists view the issue. If what they say is true, then the job that we have in front of us involves much more than the inconvenience of carpooling or buying new light bulbs. It leans a lot more closely toward "untold human tragedy as the necessary outcome of forcing human beings in developing nations to remain in the 3rd world."

It may be inconvenient for people living in malibu, but for those living at the margins, the inconvenience could mean the difference between life and death.

The southern Michigan home that I am writing in, sits at about 40 degrees latatude. It has been under glacial ice for extended periods 6 times in the last 60,000 years. Last time approx 10,000 years ago. Should people where I live worry about warm or cold?

Likeassuch,

Nice quote. Have to agree that developing nations are very vulnerable to trade restrictions.

Fair trade coffee illustrates this point very well. Fair trade partnerships usually help poor but not the poorest farmers.

The best coffee in the world comes from Ethopia. If one looks only at carbon footprint, one would obviously not buy coffee from Ethopia.

Unfortunately, malthusianism paradym seems to permeate the environmental mindset when it comes to developing nations.

Historically, this has led to abuses in the name of population control, and the environment.

I am surprised one those loons haven't came in here yet and told us it was thicker BECAUSE of global warming. Thats a normal trump card for them.
