I grew up in India and my daughter is growing up in USA.
Big difference: I never had a chance to swim or play soccer or run professionally. Neither in the schools nor from parents had I got the encouragement to pursue sports. Out PT class in school was used for picking up trash around the school.
Not that i would have won gold for my country, but when I see my 4 year old in USA already being able to swim and go to dace classes ... there is big difference attitude towards sports in India vs US. Only sport that most kids ever played is cricket that too 80% on streets.

I do not think this post is right. Wiki says 8 gold, 4 silver, and 5 bronze for a total of 17 medals, all in the summer olympics.

Lones Smith: Almost all of India's Olympic medals are for TEAM sports. No Indian athlete has ever won a gold medal for INDIVIDUAL competition.
