The War on Gambling: Cops Raid VFW Poker Game

In his latest video for Reason.tv, Drew Carey reports on how Dallas cops carried out a paramilitary-style raid on a poker game at the VFW Post #1837, which has now been forced to close its doors.

The raid is part of a broader move by local police to shut down poker games, arrest players, and seize property - even in low stakes games benefiting charity, like at the VFW. And it's emblematic of the government's misguided war on gambling, such as the recently enacted federal ban on Internet wagering.

In most jurisdictions throughout the country, consenting adults are banned from gambling -- unless of course they want to bet on low-odds games run by the government. State lotteries, that is.

This is what i never understood, when i watch US movies or series...
USA is called the country of freedom.
But many things (and not only hazard games), that are allowed in my (former East block, communist) country, are heavily banned in US.
How's that?

In Michigan, the unemployed masses place on hold while calling the Dept of Labor hotline with benefit payment problems listen to the Gov's advertising for the her beloved lottery -as if teh suggestion is, well, there's no jobs but you can always try your chances with a wager.

This is pathetic. The cops raid a VFW where are veterans are gambling. They need to get a life. Way too many other things to be going after these days. What about the government sponsored casinos on military bases throughout the world? Speak up, Uncle Sam!

I realy feel for the gamblers in the US. I cant beleive your Congress banned all banks and credit card companies from accepting transactions from online

gambling sites which makes you unable to play online poker. What a bunch of hypocrites your state

government are. They have the largest gambling operations with lotto, keno, etc. If they truly believed their rhetoric about internet gambling they would

cut out the state operations also. And now they are bringing in a law to legalise slot machines. Personally I would have a big grudge against any party

that stopped me from playing on a online poker site. I think there must be some way for you guys

to get around this problem. Must make you wonder if you are living in the land of the free when it seems the government has full control on what it will

and wont let you do.

It’s ridiculous, they give us cigarettes and say we can't smoke... they give us computers, credit cards, and websites like littlewoods poker and say we can't play online poker
