Every Civics Teacher's Worst Nightmare
In an article about low voter turnout in today's Baltimore Sun, I'm described as "an economist, blogger and every civics teacher's worst nightmare."
"The only time your vote counts is if it's a dead tie and you're the last person to vote," says Perry, a professor at the University of Michigan in Flint.
The Baltimore Sun reporter contacted me after reading this post from last November on "The Case for Low Voter Turnout," where I wrote that "I like low voter turnout, because the election results are almost always exactly same as for high voter turnout, and low voter turnout saves and conserves our most precious non-renewable resource: our time, and therefore it is socially more efficient than high voter turnout."
Bottom Line: Increasing voter turnout is very easy: lower the cost of voting.

"Increasing voter turnout is very easy: lower the cost of voting"...
Oh I totally disagree here!
Increase the cost of voting even if it means repealing an amendment and bring back the poll tax ...
What we have now is mobocracy run by the abysmally ignornant ...
What inducement is there for the parasitic in society to lower or totally remove the socialist entitlements programs that keep so many afloat without effort other than simple act of voting?
Juandos,
Your comment reminds me of a bumper sticker that I was reading while I was going insane in a traffic jam. The sticker reads "HATE TRAFFIC?" in bold letters and below that it read "You are traffic."
Let us hope that you and I are not the judge of who is abysmally ignorant and who is not.
Ahhh, the ever liberal James chimes in...
No sir, the useless and the parasitic (yourself maybe?) are the traffic jams...
The very fact that you desire to rant on regardless of real world conditions speaks volumes sir...
You offer no solutions, only more problems, costly problems at that...
You vote for the same reason you buy fire insurance: Just in case it happens, you're covered. People don't want to be an outlier statistic. Remember, even at 1-in-a-thousand odds that someone is that 1.
I think the current President Bush would like to thank some voters in Florida and Ohio for staying home on election day.

Didn't matter if non-Bush voters stayed home or voted.
"rational ignorance"
Oxymoron?
The best reason to vote is that as an active registered voter, your demographics are being considered when they take a large look at who the voters are. At least, if nothing else, demographically they will try to address your perceived concerns if you turn out at the poles. When it is consistently shown that there is an under represented demographic at the poles, politicians stop talking to them, stop addressing that demographics issues. You are not as anonymous at those poles as you might think.
Matt,
Absolutely not.
Ignorance is rational when the costs of gained knowledge outweigh the benefits.
Oh dear! Is Matt another frustrated Gore supporter?
I mean this is a very Gore-like statement: "Ignorance is rational when the costs of gained knowledge outweigh the benefits"...
BTW how do we know that this man Curtis who is giving testimony supposedly is what he says he is?
Funny how this video comes from a site that has this on it now: This domain may be for sale by its owner! along with every other bit of looney, left-wing, conspiracy nonsense...
BTW James, which of the, 'poles' are you talking about? North pole? South pole? Just curious...
juandos,
Proving once again with your incessant ranting, "the empty can rattles the most".
You caught me, a little hasty allowing the spell checker to make changes for me.
It's alway a pleasure.
Only those who don't vote have any right to complain.
