Impressions of India

As requested in one of the comments to my recent posting about Bangalore, I am providing a list of my impressions of India, from a longer trip to Bangalore 2 years ago during my sabbatical: "25 Strange and Unusual Practices, Customs and Sights in India."

1,2. How many accidents?

11. No standardisation: each house is unique. So marble & stone slabs are cut to requirement on the spot.

12. The local language in Bangalore is 'Kannada' or Canarese (not 'Kanata'.)

22. Indian Standard Time is the time at 82.5 degrees East longitude -- i.e. east of Greenwich (0 longitude.) That makes it 5 1/2 hours ahead of GMT.

23. A 'monsoon' climate _means_ it _can_ only rain during the period(s) when the prevailing wind blows across the sea. In most parts of India, the South-West monsoon blows across the Arabian Sea from mid-June to late September. That's the year's supply. In September the winds veer round to the NE & blow across land. For _some_ areas, however, this brings rain from the Bay of Bengal.
