Interactive Graphic of the Eurozone Debt Web from the BBC: Who Owes How Much to Whom?

From the BBC - "The circles in this interactive graphic show the gross external, or foreign, debt of some of the main players in the eurozone as well as other big world economies. The arrows show how much money is owed by each country to banks in other nations. The arrows point from the debtor to the creditor and are proportional to the money owed as of the end of June 2011. The colors attributed to countries are a rough guide to how much trouble each economy is in."

See sample above for Greece (click to enlarge).

Surprised that so many owe so little to Germany.

What if there was a similar graphic for U.S. Treasury debt, on how much and to whom?

As of Sept 2011, and just the top 10, in billions of USD:

-----> China 1148.3
-----> Japan 956.8
-----> UK 421.6
-----> Oil Exporters 229.9
-----> Brazil 206.1
-----> Carib Banks 173.0
-----> Taiwan 149.3
-----> Switzerland 146.1
-----> Hong Kong 109.0
-----> Russia 94.6

Although China is known to hold European debt, no comprehensive figures are available.

Or would the figures that do exist, offend the sensibilities of China?

What if there was a list that included all holders of US debt , not just foreign countries?

Although the list is from a CNBC slideshow, that is unsourced, It is probably accurate enough for this discussion.

The list of major foreign holders of US debt account for less than 1/4 of the total. It appears that the Federal Reserve Bank system holds close to $5 trillion, 1/3 of total debt, and more than all foreign countries combined.

As China holds less than 8% of US debt, I'm not sure why we hear silly things about China owning the US.

Does that mean European countries don't know how much they owe, or to whom?

Yeah, that gave me pause also. It just happened to be one of the few search results with a list of any kind. I had trouble finding anything like this at Treasury.

Sorry about the duplicate entry, I published before I was finished writing. I meant to get back to delete the first comment, but you're too fast for me. I'll do it now. :)
