Chart of the Day: March Vehicle Sales Up 21%

These figures have been out for awhile, so this is a little outdated, but I'm using the chart for a talk tomorrow and thought I'd post it, with an explanation of the lag. Vehicle sales increased in March by 21.3% compared to the same month last year, the highest annual increase since July 2005 (data here).

A sign of the American recovery. Also, at March, retail sales increased a 1'6%.

sales are still barely above their 30 year low in actual units.

these % figures are very misleading after such and extreme drop.

look at the unit chart in the link and see if that looks like recovery to you.

The average auto sales count for the 10 year period from 1997-2007 was 16 million. That's the trend line. March sales were a 11.8 million run rate and edmunds.com estimates that the April rate was 11.2 million. Wow, what a V-shape.
