It’s no wonder that a cottage industry has sprung up to fill this void. Known as medical billing advocates, these middlemen and women help patients deal with the paperwork and haggling often associated with medical costs. In general, medical billing advocates help you find errors in your bills, negotiate with your insurer to appeal coverage denials, or negotiate lower fees with your medical care providers.

ReplyDeleteA patient of mine, a member of a religious group that does purchase health insurance, needed MRIs of her head and cervical spine. Our hospital, in northern Michigan, wanted about $4500. She was visiting in Indiana and found out that the scans could be done there for $1000, plus she was given a typed report and a copy of the MRIs on a CD.
